Physical Features

The tundra is low, vast, and swampy. Alpine tundras are on top of mountains. They are also treeless.

There is rain and fog in the summertime, and water collects in bogs and ponds.

A bog is wet, spongy ground with soil composed mainly of decayed vegetable matter.

Due to the low temperatures, the water evaporates very slowly.

Therefore, the tundra is a very wet place. (EO Experiments: Tundra Biome, par. 9)

The subsoil of the tundra is permanently frozen. This is called permafrost.
